Suzuki Hayabusa

Suzuki Hayabusa

Suzuki Hayabusa

Suzuki introduced the sportbike Suzuki GSX1300R, popularly known as the Hayabusa, in 1999. Since its inception the Suzuki Hayabusa was widely regarded as the fastest production motorcycle in the world until major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers voluntarily imposed speed regulators in their bikes.

The Hayabusa derives its name from the Japanese term for the Peregrine Falcon, the fastest creature on the planet with speeds in excess of 300 km/h in its hunting dive. The Hayabusa's 4-stroke, four-cylinder liquid-cooled 1299cc engine enables it to generate an enormous peak power of 175 bhp at 9800 rpm and reach from 0-100 km/h in three seconds flat.

The Hayabusa's roaring success prompted other motorcycle manufacturers to come up with similar speed merchants like the BMW K1200S and the Kawasaki ZX-14R.

Kinetic Boss 115

Kinetic Boss 115

Kinetic Boss 115

Kinetic Engineering launched the Boss 115 in August, 2003, in an effort to add more value to the entry-level segment of the bike market. With higher engine capacity and greater power in bhp, the Boss 115 brings in the performance dimension in the economy section.

Boss 115 is equipped with a four-stroke, air-cooled, single cylinder 115cc engine that delivers a power of 8.4 bhp at 7500 rpm. The powerful engine ensures better acceleration and roll-on timings for the Boss. The dual tube cradle frame makes for a comfortable ride in the potholed roads of rural hinterland.

Despite being the best performer of the entry-level segment, the Boss 115 lags behind its rivals in the mileage front. Regarding braking, Boss comes with industry standard drums at the front and rear but the braking quality leaves much to be desired.

Hero Honda Achiever

Hero Honda Achiever

Hero Honda Achiever

The Hero Honda Achiever bears a striking resemblance to the Ambition model in terms of overall appearance. Other than the front fairing and the instrument cluster, everything else-- the tank, side panels, or the tailpiece --has been picked up verbatim from the Ambition.

If the styling cues have been taken from the Ambition, the power pack has been lifted from the Honda Unicorn. The two motors are almost identical, barring a minuscule 0.1bhp increase claimed for the Achiever over the older Unicorn's 13.3bhp at 8000rpm.

The Achiever is equipped with a four-stroke engine constructed of aluminium-alloy with an air-cooled, and twin-valve equipped motor of 149.1cc displacement. The bike uses the conventional suspension set-up of telescopic shock absorbers up front and rectangular swingarm with adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear.

For a 150cc bike, Achiever scores high on the mileage front. The Hero Honda Achiever delivers an impressive 51.3 kpl in real city conditions and 55.3kpl on the highway. Despite a gem of an engine and good riding quality, the Achiever somehow lacks the killer punch to stand out in a competitive market.

Hnda Unicorn

Honda Unicorn

Honda Unicorn

Honda Unicorn is the first motorcycle by Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Pvt. Ltd. in the Indian market. It is attractively styled and incorporates many cutting-edge technologies.

Honda Unicorn is equipped with extremely refined and responsive 150cc engine. This smooth revving engine has been infused with a high torque characteristic that makes the Unicorn one of the most fuel-efficient in its class. The high torque available at low rpm levels also reduces the necessity of frequent switching to a lower gear in city riding conditions. The Unicorn's 150cc engine develops a peak torque of 1.3 Kg-m at an astonishingly low 5,500 rpm.

Honda Unicorn has been loaded with a host of technological features such as a constant velocity carburettor, a two-way air jacket, roller rocker arm, multi-mapping, pulse exhaust system and an offset crank. These features result in excellent pick-up and a smooth delivery of power in all speed and rpm ranges. Unicorn also has a digital CDI ignition with multi-mapping for better engine performance.

Honda Unicorn is the first motorcycle in India with the hi-tech Mono Suspension that enables riding comfort and control. Mono-suspension is better than the traditional twin shockers as it provides better handling and more consistent cushioning at the rear.

Honda Unicorn's other useful features include a puncture resistant Tuff-up tube and tyre combination at the rear; storage space under the seat; and sturdy, thickset winkers for better visibility and roadworthiness.

Hero Honda Karizma

Hero Honda Karizma

Hero Honda Karizma

Hero Honda Karizma is a top-end bike from the Hero Honda stable and targets the niche section of customers that prefer performance to economy.

Karizma comes with a 223cc single cylinder, air-cooled, four stroke engine that packs a maximum power of 17bhp at 7000rpm. Apart from breaking the 200cc barrier, the bike breaks fresh grounds in the acceleration front. Karizma conquers the four-second barrier for zero to sixty kph, doing it 3.8 seconds.

On the styling front, Karizma draws inspiration from Honda's cult VFR 800, the legendary and largest selling superbike from the Japanese giant. Striking similarities exist in the alloy die-cast wheels, the tailpiece, the front indicators, the fairing, the silencer unit, seat, panel shapes and instrument binnacle.

The Karizma comes with factory-fitted mag wheels and the long wheelbase at 1355mm provides stability to the bike. The motorcycle has a top speed of 125kph and performs commendably at speeds around 100kph. The Karizma is equipped with a massive 15-litre fuel tank (FT) with a 2-litre reserve.

The Karizma ensures excellent braking with the 276mm disc up front (largest so far) and the 130mm rear drum brakes. The mag wheels give a very un-cluttered look to the rear wheel.

Yamaha Gladiator

Yamaha Gladiator

After the subdued response to the Fazer, Yamaha Motor India has made another foray into the executive bike segment with the Gladiator. Despite retaining the basic build of the Fazer, the Gladiator sports a more traditional look.

At the front, the conventional form of the bikini fairing and visor are complemented by their sporty and chunky design. The die-cast triple clamp, the large fuel tank with its shapely dummy air scoops on both side and the stepped up design of the seat lend a masculine look to the Gladiator.

The Gladiator is equipped with a single cylinder, four-stroke engine that generates a displacement of 123.7cc. The engine produces a peak power of 11PS at 7,500 rpm and the peak torque of 10.4Nm sets in at 6,500 rpm.

The counter balancer for the crankshaft ensures low vibrations for the Gladiator thus improving the overall refinement and ride comfort. The Gladiator comes with a unique fuel-saving feature called YTPS or the Yamaha Throttle Position Sensor.
